We are not the first Christians in history. Before us there has been a great line of godly men who were wiser and holier than we are. Wisdom was not born with us and it will not die with us. In the multitude of counselors, there is victory and security. Theological novelties are usually synonymous with heresy. Although no man or church council is the authoritative standard of correct interpretation of Scripture, the Lord has placed pastors and teachers in the church throughout history who were extraordinarily enlightened with spiritual discernment in the knowledge of Scripture. Their consensus defines the parameters of historical orthodoxy and serves as a useful guide in our interpretation of them. We identify with the Reformed tradition and uphold it as the systematic statement of our theology the London Confession of 1689.
